Detroit
John spent the morning looking for a gun, and the afternoon driving me around downtown Detroit. It's at once very familiar and totally disorientating. People live here. They have ten-foot cyclone fences around their yards, kids toys on the verandah, and burnt-out crack houses next-door. Crazy-eyed teenagers scan the street a thousand times a minute; vacant-eyed women with mad hair shuffle along sidewalks. Ten year old kids loiter with palpable intent. You don't stop at signals, shit, we didn't even get out of the car. We backed out of streets. Often. Half these pictures were taken as the car was moving, most of them through tinted windows. -

Huntington Beach
So I work with this guy who loves to work people really hard and then take them to great places to celebrate. Huntington Beach, south of Los Angeles. California may be bankrupt, they may be laying off half the teachers and nurses because they can't pay them, but there are worse places to be. -
New York City
I've been able to spend a lot of time in New York the past few years. This set is from May 2009.
